PRESS RELEASE
Beginning the week of March 19, anyone interested in applying for a job with Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) will submit an application online. SMECO is implementing a new computerized system to process and track job applications more efficiently. Applicants can visit SMECO’s Web site at www.smeco.coop, select the “Careers” option, and complete the job application online. The system features easy-to-use directions that will walk applicants through the entire job application process.
Later this year, SMECO offices in Hughesville, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, and White Plains will have a do-it-yourself station in each facility. These stations will be available to customer-members at all times for account inquiries, payment transactions, and job applications. In addition, public libraries throughout Maryland, as well as Southern Maryland Workforce Services locations, have computers with Internet access available.
For some positions that are advertised, SMECO may receive several hundred applications. The new computerized system will more efficiently match applicants’ skills with job requirements and generate applicant pools. Applications will stay on file for one year, allowing qualified applicants to be considered for positions as they come open. Judy Dudley, SMECO’s personnel manager, explained, “the accessibility and convenience of the Internet will make applying for a job much easier for prospective employees. The improved efficiency helps employers as well as potential employees.” SMECO is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity in the workplace. SMECO strives to be the employer of choice in Southern Maryland.
