Ninth Annual Elementary Mathematics Challenge Held
Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECO) and the public school systems of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties recently sponsored the ninth annual Elementary Mathematics Challenge. More than 650 students from almost 60 elementary schools participated in the competition. Each school was invited to send a team of fourth-graders and a team of fifth-graders, with up to seven students per team. Students competed individually by taking a multiple-choice test in the first part of the challenge. Students then worked together in teams to complete five multiple-step mathematics problems. The scores of the top five individuals from each school are combined, then the team score is added in to obtain the final school total.
