PRESS RELEASE

High Winds Cause Power Outages

Update: April 16, 2007, 5 p.m.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) is currently working to restore power to nearly 9,000 customer-members. Rain and high winds brought down trees and power lines and caused outages throughout the Southern Maryland area.

Damage from the storm is causing scattered outages throughout SMECO’s service area, and crews are working to make repairs. Outage incidents are expected throughout the evening as the wind and rain continue to affect power lines and electric equipment. As of 5 p.m, Monday, approximately 500 incidents have been identified as being in need of repair. Power was restored to the Piney Point and Valley Lee areas after repairs were made to a transmission line damaged by a fallen tree this afternoon.

To report outages and downed power lines, customers may call 1-888-440-3311 or 1-877-747-6326. Downed power lines are dangerous. People should stay away from downed lines and anything that may be touching a power line. Customers are encouraged to use flashlights during an outage, not candles, because candles may cause fires.

SMECO thanks all of its customer-members for their patience while crews work to restore service.
