Once again, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) is offering $1,500 college scholarships to four worthy high school seniors entering college for the 2007-2008 school year. To be eligible, students must have maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and must live and attend school within SMECO’s service area.
Application packages must be submitted by Friday, March 2, 2007. To receive an application, guidelines, or for more information, visit your school’s guidance counselor or SMECO’s Web site at www.smeco.coop/whatsnew/scholar.html. Completed application packages may be delivered to any SMECO office; they may also be mailed to SMECO’s Hughesville Headquarters, P.O. Box 1937, Hughesville, MD 20637, Attention: Bernadette Lewis. All application package items must be submitted together.
Scholarships will be awarded based on students’ scholastic achievement (40 percent); financial need (50 percent); and an interview, school involvement, and community involvement (10 percent). Essays and required documentation will be evaluated by SMECO’s Scholarship Awards Committee, then the top seven candidates will be interviewed by the committee on Saturday, March 24.
