SMECO Receives Governor’s Volunteer Service Award

The Maryland Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism honored Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) at the 24 th Annual Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards ceremony, held on April 17, 2007.

SMECO was one of several Maryland organizations named as Special Honorees this year. The award commemorates the 70 th anniversary of the founding of the Cooperative. The ceremony noted that SMECO “remains a cooperative corporation, owned by its members and operated for them on a non-profit basis. Rates are based on the cost of doing business. Surplus income is returned to the members through Capital Credits.”
