SMECO celebrates Women’s History Month by honoring a woman-owned business in Southern Maryland.

Carolyn Egrie is President of Baldwin Design Group, Inc., in Solomons Island, Maryland. She works with businesses and organizations, both local and national, to custom-design their office spaces. Whether for a single office or an entire office building, the process begins the same way: Carolyn personally meets with the client to hone in on their needs. From there, she develops a CAD drawing that incorporates all elements of the project, including furnishings, carpet, files, storage, lighting, window treatments, and architectural finishes. Prefabricated furniture can be ordered at deeply discounted rates; or, if the client prefers, pieces can be custom-designed.
Carolyn holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design from Drexel University. She is a Certified Interior Designer and a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Carolyn has further proven her skills and knowledge by passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ) exam.
Carolyn’s career began in Philadelphia. After working for twelve years as senior designer for an office furniture dealership, she moved to Southern Maryland and established Baldwin Design Group. In the early days, she used local radio advertising to promote her business. Today, most of her clients are referred by other satisfied customers.
“People trust my recommendations,” Carolyn says, “because they can see work that I have completed.”
And providing customers with outstanding service at an excellent value is something that’s always been important to Carolyn.
“People come to me when their project becomes complex.”
According to Carolyn, setting up her business was not difficult because many customers consider interior design a traditional woman’s profession. Establishing the dealership and credit line, often still perceived as traditional male responsibilities, was another matter.
