ONLINE HOME ENERGY AUDIT
To successfully complete the home energy audit, you will need some information about the equipment in your home.
If your home has a heat pump or central air conditioner,
you will need to know its size rating in tons.
To find out the size rating, go to the outside unit and look
for the manufacturer's label. Locate the model number
on the label as shown in the examples below.
Following a series of letters or numbers, there will be BTU
designation in the model number (highlighted in the picture
above). Use the chart below to convert the unit's BTU designation
to tonnage.
| BTU Designator | Tonnage |
| 018 024 030 036 042 048 060 |
1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 3.5 4.0 5.0 |
If your home has window air conditioner units, you will need their age and BTU ratings. This appears on the manufacturer's nameplate. The nameplate can be found behind the grill or cover of the unit. The date the unit was manufactured may not be available on the nameplate. If it is not, estimate the age of the unit.
You can find the water heater temperature by using a thermometer or going to the water heater and looking at the thermostat. To determine the temperature using a thermometer, run the hot water at a faucet for approximately 3-5 minutes. After the water reaches maximum temperature, fill a cup with hot water and check the temperature.
When checking the temperature at the water heater, it is important to first turn off the water heater at the breaker box. Once the power is off, remove the bottom access panel of the water heater. This panel covers the water heater's thermostat. Behind the panel, there may be some insulation or foam in front of the thermostat. Push this aside to read the thermostat setting.
If your home has baseboard heaters, you will need the total
length of the heaters in feet. Measure the length of each
baseboard heater and add them all together.
If your home has a pool, you will need the horsepower rating of the pool pump. This should be listed in the manufacturer's label on the pool pump housing.
The size of dehumidifiers is usually noted in pints. Check the label on your unit, or refer to the owner's manual to determine the size of your dehumidifier.
