A Bit About Why We’ve Proposed This Project

  • Our customers’ increasing demand for electricity means we need to improve our transmission system to ensure continued reliability. This project will bring power to your county, not through your county.
  • Southern Maryland and Calvert County have grown significantly over the past 30 years — the number of customers has tripled, while the amount of energy used is five times greater.
  • More residents means more businesses, schools, shopping centers, sports fields, and first responders. That growth, coupled with changing lifestyles and our increasing dependence on electronics, has resulted in a huge increase in electricity demand.
  • From computers, TVs and DVDs, to air conditioning and appliances, our use of electronics and demand for electricity has skyrocketed — roughly 70% more per household.
  • In fact, the amount of energy used each year is five times greater than it was 30 years ago at 683,000 MW hours —and is expected to continue to grow.

This much-needed improvement will create a continuous “loop” of electric service around our service area and create more flexibility to move power around.  It will enhance critical emergency preparedness for first responders, hospitals, and military installations in our area.
